St David's historic cathedral clock tower gets timely makeover on its clock faces
If you have ever visited the magnificent location that is St David's then you will no doubt have noticed the rather grand cathedral clock tower in the centre of the city. In order to look this magnificent for long periods of time restoration is necessary every once in a while and in this case the clock dial have been treated to a makeover.Smith of Derby carried out the works and has been maintaining the clock annually for more than 50 years. The company was contacted by staff from the famous 12th Century Cathedral in 2012 after a regular inspection revealed that part of one of the dial centres had come away. In order to carry out the repairs the clock dials were removed earlier this year and transported to Derby. The removal of the old rust, application of a zinga primer undercoat and finishing the dials in their original blue colour gloss was all included in the process of fully restoring the dials. Additionally the numerals, minute marks and hands were also re-gilded using 23 1/2 carat double thickness gold leaf. A must-see if you ever visit when you're staying in one of our last minute cottages. Wales has many impressive and interesting attractions and the clock tower possesses its own quirk. Although the clock tower has four faces, dials were only ever installed on three, which face to the south, west and east. This was due to the fact that the fundraising efforts of the day failed to raise enough money to cover the cost of a fourth dial on the north face.
