Aurora Borealis seen in North WalesThe Northern Lights, or Aurora Borealis to give the phenomena its full name, is often listed as a must see natural event. It seems like almost every bucket list of "things to see before you die" includes the Northern Lights, which usually occur only inside the Arctic Circle. Named after the Roman goddess of Dawn, aurora, the Northern Lights become visible when energy charged particles carried by solar winds into the high altitude atmosphere collide with each other. Because this usually only happens when the earth's magnetic field pulls the particles together at high latitudes anyone normally interested in seeing the aurora would have to travel to Northern Scandinavia to witness it. But recent unusual weather conditions have meant the aurora has been seen at lower latitudes and has even been visible from our holiday cottages North Wales. Our cottages were treated to the spectacular light show this past week, with guests at the cottages able to see the aurora for around an hour. Incredible images of the brightly lit Northern sky were captured across North Wales, including the above image which Tracey Snelnus captured at Penmon on Anglesey. Her image, above, includes the Penmon lighthouse and shows how incredible the light show was. Also captured in North Wales was this amazing image of the seafront at Rhyl with the sky lit up by aurora borealis.
