New book celebrates Welsh landscape

Filled with over a hundred short essays and illustrated with over 400 imaginative photos, 100 o Olygfeydd Hynod Cymru (100 Striking Views of Wales) sets out to tell the stories of some of Wales' most interesting and overlooked areas of landscape. Written by geologist Dr Dyfed Elis-Gruffydd, the book sets out to tell some of the countless stories of the formation of some of Wales' most captivating beauty spots, beginning the story millions of years ago when the land itself was formed. This, he says, provides the basis for all of the events that followed and created the Wales that we have today. As well as telling the stories of Welsh beauty spots such as those found in Anglesey and Snowdonia among others, Dyfed also offers insights into Welsh industrial history, explaining the backgrounds not only of the coalfields but also lesser known sites such as the centres of gold mining in Snowdonia and West Wales. Previously blamed on a man named Seithenyn, who the rising of the sea level was attributed to, the rising sea level is now accepted to be caused by the continuous burning of fossil fuels.
