Snowdonia National Park volunteers using GPS devices to keep the area tidy
`A forward-thinking charity has begun using satellite tracking technology in order to help diminish the amount of litter being found in Snowdonia.
Teams of volunteers from the Snowdonia Society have been taking GPS devices out with them on their habitual litter picks across the national park.
They are using them so that they can track and record where any litter is found. By making a record they will be able to compile a computer map of the most affected areas on Snowdonia.
Once the map has been put together these areas will be pinpointed for more frequent clean-ups.
Project officer Owain Thomas told BBC Radio Wales: "When you compare the amount of visitors that Snowdon has with other popular mountain areas in the UK, the amount of litter that accumulates is quite low.
"But there are certain hotspots in popular picnic lunch areas where you'll find the majority of the litter, and winds sometimes blow it around the mountain."
The GPS tracking device the volunteers have been using on their clean-ups is a small device, not much bigger than a person's thumb. This gadget allows a volunteer to simply click a button every time a piece of litter is collected, and the device then logs the exact location where they was found the item of rubbish.
It is important to remember to take your rubbish with you and recycle wherever possible. Fortunately, beautiful areas like those near our Snowdonia holiday cottages are being well protected by visitors and local volunteers alike!
