Campaign launched to protect Snowdonia's Meirionydd Oakwoods
Although Snowdonia is a widely-known and incredibly popular national park, few know of the 550 acres of ancient woodland and heathland that make up the Meirionydd Oakwoods, part of the Celtic Rainforest of Western Britain and Ireland. Backed by public figures such as Iolo Williams, a campaign has now been launched to protect one of the Oakwoods' several nature reserves, Ceunant Llennyrch, based near our cottages in Snowdonia.
So far, the campaign has had a ?50,000 contribution from National Resources Wales, with a further ?750,000 needed for the project to go ahead. The Woodland Trust, who will assume ownership and take on any conservation work, will match the contribution in order to help raise the total funds needed of ?1.5m.
The Oakwoods originally covered a large stretch of land from Northern Scotland to Portugal, and this kind of rainforest is even rarer today than the tropical rainforests found in other continents. These rainforests have gradually died out due to the extensive farming of the land which has taken place since the end of the Ice Age.
It is an area especially diverse in wildlife, including over 200 different species of moss, liverworts and lichens - some found nowhere else in Wales.
The conservation work, if it goes ahead, will help to not only to restore the woodlands to their natural condition, but will also help to promote green tourism in Snowdonia.
