Hay Castle, Hay on Wye
Vibrant market and ‘book’town’ Hay on Wye has another exciting enterprise to indulge locals and visitors. New yes but ancient at the same time. Once a great medieval stronghold Hay Castle in the heart of town has had an industrious past. Part Norman, part Jacobean and part Victorian, home to invaders and patriots, a country manor, a world famous bookshop and now a budding major new centre for culture, arts and education. The buildings and the grounds are perfectly suited for musical and dramatic performances, cultural events, performing arts and workshops.
There are several unique shops on the grounds, including The Olde Curiosity Shoppe, Baine and Murrin Purveyors of the Finest Junk, Hay Castle Bookshop, Green’s Corner Bookshop, and The Lamb House Gallery.
The recently refurbished Honesty Bookshop is a delightful outdoor space to read, relax and enjoy the buzz of Hay’s town centre. The Honesty Bookshop has been a tradition since the 1960’s. All books are £1 or less. There is no till; money is simply left in the collecting box. And it all benefits the restoration of Hay Castle.
Hay Castle Trust is a registered charity that was formed in 2011 to preserve this historic site and provide a future of cultural enrichment, educational opportunities and community enjoyment.
You can help too
The restoration and regeneration of Hay Castle is an exciting community project. Volunteers and support are always welcome. You can volunteer your time or expertise. If you’re interested in the grounds and gardens, arts, education, historical research, or helping with essential fundraising or involving the community, please contact email@example.com. You need never be bored on holiday in Hay on Wye.
