Black Rock Sands is a fabulous beach by Porthmadog, on the edge of Snowdonia National Park. Contrary to what its name suggests, it is a wide expanse of fine golden sands, backed by grassy sand dunes that have been declared as a 'Site of Special Scientific Interest'. A particularly interesting feature is the large, multi-coloured headland rock on the west side of the beach. Black Rock Sands stretch for 2 miles, and are a popular place for kite surfers. Black Rock Sands holiday cottages are an ideal choice for who enjoy watersports such as swimming, bodyboarding, surfing, kayaking and windsurfing. At low tide, the beach exposes its rock pools and craggy caves, which are fantastic for exploring the marine life and catching a crab or two! There are excellent facilities by the beach, including a slipway, toilets and a small shop for refreshments. It is also ideal for beach picnics, as you can DRIVE CARS ONTO THE BEACH.
The nearest town, Porthmadog, is the perfect base for exploring the rest of Snowdonia and its breathtaking mountainous scenery. The town itself is an eclectic mix of individual shops and boutiques, quality restaurants and pubs, antique stores, book shops and cafes. There is also an attractive harbour where you can walk along the water's edge and watch the boats bob up and down. A smaller village even closer to Black Rock Sands is Morfa Bychan, which is home to 18 hole golf course which allows casual one-day membership for those passing through.
