Why we recommend Big House...

This stunning old farmhouse with wonderful sea views is pet friendly and ideal for family holidays near Harlech & Portmeirion in the Snowdonia National Park.
About Big House

Big House nr Harlech

  • Enjoy sublime panoramic sea views from almost every window of the house and gardens of this painstakingly restored old farmhouse - an ideal home from home for a family holiday,
  • Set in its own grounds in the Snowdonia National Park, just across the Dwryd Estuary from Tremadog Bay, unique Portmeirion on its wooded headland and the Rhinog Mountains range beyond.
  • By the side of the farmhouse is Little House, beautifully appointed and  with its own private patio area and garden [Little House (1300)].
  • A sense of calm, in tune with its rural setting, pervades the house which is surrounded by its own fields and traditional outbuildings. The attention to every detail throughout  gives a sense of ‘rustic chic’ -  pale chalky walls, painted beams, original doors with a natural bleached look, blinds, cushions and bed heads covered in a variety of unusual fabrics.
  • Vibrant pictures adorn the walls - many by the owner  - and an eclectic mixture of bright china mixed with modern pieces stand out against the pale walls. Imaginatively used salvaged objects make unusual side tables etc - enchanting finds are everywhere.
  • The main sitting room has an imposing inglenook fireplace with wood burning stove, cosy and comfortable in colder months, a beautiful dining room leads into the kitchen and the  romantic bedrooms have a wealth of delicate decorative details.
  • There is a self-contained apartment 'hide away', ideal for family or friends who may seek a little independence with a smaller second sitting room which has wall to wall bifold doors which open onto the garden and a woodburning stove in an inglenook as well as a small ‘kitchenette‘ under the stairs which lead up to an en-suite double bedroom.
  • The large lawned garden has  Edwardian style wicker chairs and tables surrounded by mature shrubs - vibrant blue hydrangeas in summertime and rhododendrons and azaleas in spring.
  • Ynys Headland is close by, ideal for children to potter in the sand and for adults to enjoy the views across to Portmeirion and the ‘pyramid’ of Snowdon standing out amongst the mighty peaks of Snowdonia.
  • Walk from the house - 5 mins - down to the North Wales Coastal Path or up to the Ardudwy Way mountain footpath (an old drover's road).  Walk or drive up to Llandecwyn and explore this beautiful wooded area sprinkled with lakes.  There are also enchanting walks through this ancient Welsh rainforest in the lovely Maentwrog Valley at Tanybwlch.  This area is a National Nature Reserve and home to a vast array of bird life - redstart, wood warbler, nuthatch and many more.
  • Another easy walk takes you to Llandecwyn Station on the Cambrian Coast Railway line which links to the Ffestiniog & Welsh Highland Railways at Porthmadog.
  •  Harlech’s long sandy beach, possibly one of the finest beaches on the Welsh coast, is never crowded and close by is Llandanwg with a N.T. field behind the sand dunes which shelter a 12th Century church.  This is open throughout August to visitors, there is a flower festival in July and services one Sunday a month throughout the year.

Portmeirion

  • A favourite haunt of the Duke of Windsor, this Italianate folly is set on a beautiful headland and blends beautifully into its environment – it has a magical appeal in its uniqueness.  Stroll the grounds and enjoy the pretty shops and walks behind the village or dine/lunch in the sumptuous hotel.

 Harlech

  • Dominated by Edward I’s mighty fortress,  this is a small thriving village with a superb ice cream shop close to the castle. The Blue Lion courtyard is home to Freya’s lovely café serving scrumptious snacks throughout the day -  try their delicious scones probably the best in Harlech - or dine in The Plas Café a Harlech institution eat out on the terrace and watch the sunset over the castle.
  • For something exotic try the newly opened Soul Food Restaurant for a taste of Caribbean cookery!   For special occasions and superb food there is The Castle Cottage -  booking advisable.

 Royal St. David’s Golf Club

  • This is  well known throughout the golfing world  - considered to be the 38th best course in the world outside the U.S. it gained its ‘royal’ status when the Duke of Windsor played here in the 1930s  when he was Prince of Wales - a challenging course but a ‘must’ for any serious golfer.
RSPB Osprey Centre
  • The Centre is a short drive and has a ‘hide’ from which visitors can observe the nest of the Ospreys and their chicks from a camera set up close to their secret nest. The Ospreys have been returning to the same nest now for several years to the delight of many.

Llandecwyn

  • Take a drive and  explore this beautiful wooded area sprinkled with lakes.  There are also enchanting walks in the lovely Maentwrog Valley at Tanybwlch. This area is a National Nature Reserve and home to a vast array of bird life – redstart, wood warbler, nuthatch and many more. The Ffestiniog Railway can be joined here - take the train up to Blaenau Ffestiniog and walk back down through this ancient Welsh rainforest.

 Plas Brondanw Gardens

  • These are close to The Glaslyn Osprey Centre and the manor house was the home of the architect who designed Portmeirion - Clough Williams Ellis.  Less famous than the village, the gardens are considered by many to be his most important creation. Wander round and enjoy the tranquil setting and also admire the stunning location. There is a small café at the entrance which serves light snacks throughout the day.

Blaenau Ffestiniog

  • Enjoy the thrill of a lifetime on Europe’s longest zip wire ride. Recently opened and featured in many national newspapers and on the BBC ‘Countryfile’ programme, the zip wire hurls along at 70mph at a height of 500 ft over the slate quarry in the breathtaking heart of Snowdonia.
  • There is also a  trampoline inside the huge slate cavern for children and adults to enjoy and a mountain biking track - the world championship was held here this year.
 Theatre Ardudwy
  • This is a large modern development on the road into Harlech has an extensive programme of plays, concerts, operas all by renowned touring companies and also shows the latest films.

Farm Park & Play Barn

  • Just 1 mile south of Harlech this is a great place for a day out for the young ones -  there are goats and baby rabbits to be fed and a play barn with plenty of activities to keep tots happy for hours!
