About Lower Lochturffin
Luxury Pembrokeshire house near Abermawr and Aberbach beaches, pets welcome
  • Lower Lochturffin - "the boundary of the marsh water".
  • The Welsh Government’s 'Visit Wales' 5 star rating, the only property in Wales with a perfect score of 175 out of 175. Also certified by 'Visit Wales' as meeting the requirements of its Walkers and Cyclists Welcome Scheme. Recommended in the "Travel Doctor" column of The Times newspaper 15 October 2016. A unique beautifully renovated home of two Pembrokeshire stone barns, in part dating back to the early 18th century, linked together by a central lounge which has floor to ceiling glass walls on two sides and a turf roof.
  • Amazing location, with beautiful sunsets, overlooking and with access to private nature reserve containing two small lakes and a meadow with large pond, both surrounded by beautiful countryside.
  • Guests often return, with repeat bookings typical.
  • The property is accessed down a gated private tree lined drive-way of roughly a quarter mile. Set in approximately seven acres of fenced, landscaped and wooded gardens and nature reserve, there is plenty of room for children to play and kick a ball. August 2014 saw the commencement of a biodiversity project in the meadow to restore it to wild flowers and trees native only to the British Isles.
  • Lower Lochturffin has its own unique and specially compiled pictorial user guide book, featuring the history and meaning of the name of the cottage, the amenities the cottage has to offer and a personal review by the family owners of the many nearby local beaches and places to eat.
  • Whilst the cottage is fenced off from the nature reserve, lakes and pond, the lakes and pond each being about 100 yards from the cottage, guests should always supervise their children when they are in the nature reserve or meadow, particularly where the children are young or unable to swim.
  • Lower Lochturffin is a stylishly furnished and equipped quality holiday cottage with extremely high standards throughout.
  • Eat out on the patio, with its sun loungers and barbecue, with views to the nature reserve, or have a picnic in the meadow or at some of the other picnic spots suggested in the user guide. We have a picnic backpack for your use.
  • Under floor central heating - every room with its' own thermostatic control, and an oil burning stove in the lounge makes this beautiful home extremely comfortable and warm all year.
  • The family owners place a high emphasis on ensuring the cleanliness of the cottage, with the house keeper having received many compliments in the visitors' book for it being spotless.
  • You can park within a few yards of the front door and there is just a single step in the cottage, between the lounge and two of the three bedrooms. There is no step at the main entry door to the cottage, allowing for easy wheelchair access.
  • There are no extra charges over and above what you pay to Quality Cottages. Two pet dogs are also welcome free of charge - the immediate and greater property is fenced.

    About The Area
Fly Fishing on Private Lakes (with occasional visits from otters!)
    • Why not try free fly fishing on the larger lake for rainbow trout? No other kind of fishing is permitted. The fishing season is from 1 April to 31 October. A fishing licence is required and fishing is limited to 2 anglers at any one time, although it is unlikely that anyone else will be fishing. You must supply your own fly fishing  equipment. Dry fly and nymph. No reservoir lures. Catch and release preferred, but you are welcome to take home one rainbow trout each per day per rod.
    • 2014 saw the arrival of otters at Lower Lochturffin – great for nature lovers, but not necessarily great for fishing! By law we are prohibited from interfering with otters (and would anyway not do so), so if it is your intention to fish during your stay, please make Quality Cottages specifically aware of this at the time of your booking so we can do our best to ensure that the lake is stocked prior to your arrival.
Pembrokeshire beaches near quality holiday cottage
    • There are at least 17 beaches within a 13.3 mile radius of the cottage, which is well situated for beaches to the north, south and west. The descriptions, pictures and distances from the cottage of these beaches are contained in the cottage's user guide book. The cottage also has a copy of the “Pembrokeshire Beaches” Official Guide of the Pembrokeshire Coast National Park Authority, for your use.

    Eating out
    • The cottage's user guide book contains descriptions, some pictures, owner reviews, contact details, addresses and distances from the cottage of eighteen places to eat, all within an 10 mile radius.
    Bird Watching
    • Bird watch from the cottage or nature reserve. We have installed a number of nesting sites and continue to install more. See if you can spot the buzzards that nest in the trees flanking the driveway. The cottage has an RSPB guide to British birds, a guide of British Birds arranged by colour and a comprehensive book and guide to the nearby world famous Skomer Island nature reserve, renowned for its large breeding seabird population, including Manx Sheerwaters, Guillemots, Razorbills, Great Cormorants, Black legged Kittiwakes, Atlantic Puffins, European Storm-petrels, Common Shags, Eurasian Oystercatchers and gulls, as well as birds of prey including Short-eared Owls, Common Kestrels and Peregrine Falcons. The departure point for the short trip to Skomer is roughly a 50 minute drive from the cottage. The departure point to the RSPB reserve, Ramsey Island, is 10 miles away, about a 25 minute drive.

    Why you love Lower Lochturffin
[Lower Lochturffin lists, in random order, all reviews written in its guest comment book in the past year]. What a joy to find such an amazing place - spacious, light, clean and well equipped! Unbelievably good weather, sunny, still and cold all week - ideal for coastal walks. Loved the magical effect of the sun on the silhouettes of the surrounding trees. Thanks for the goodies. 25 November - 2 December 2016
    Hughes
We had four reasonable days as far as the weather was concerned, the other two were horrendous - gale force wind, torrential rain, and very cold! We were glad we were in this superb cottage. As usual the accommodation was superb. Many thanks for the honey and marmalade. 18 - 25 November 2016 [This was the Reeves' 18th visit to the cottage]
    Reeves
We have visited this part of Wales many times - the area is beautiful. The cottage is clean, comfortable and well equipped - thank you to all concerned ! A special thank you to Mr Reynolds for such prompt attention to re-set the main power on Saturday. We would like to return, thank you. 28 October - 4 November 2016
    Irving
Once again we have had a lovely week, weather not too bad for Autumn, dry most days ! Been out every day with the dog for some nice walks and visited many places. Had to reset electrics three times during week. Looking forward to our next visit in 2017. Thanks for the honey and marmalade. 7 - 14 November 2016 [Note from the owners - new trip switches were immediately installed in order that the source of any electrical fault can be immediately detected and remedied]

Excellent cottage in a beautiful location. We have enjoyed a great week here in a very comfortable and very clean home .... a gold star to " The Team ". Wonderful weather and gorgeous Pembrokeshire bliss!!!!! 30 September - 7 October 2016

We have had the most magical Christmas in this beautiful house. We settled in straight away and just fell in love with it ! We also adore this part of Wales with its beautiful scenery and stunning beaches - great for walking the dogs ! Thank you for the honey you left for us - delicious!! Cannot wait to return ! 22 - 29 December 2016

We have had a week of two halves, the first of which the weather was glorious, the second half wet and windy - typical Welsh weather! Despite being somewhat restricted due to my husband's health & Bonnie (the collie) being recently diagnosed with a tumour, we've loved the garden and the nature reserve. We'd like to express our sincere thanks to Mr Reynolds, the caretaker, who came to our aid twice, once on Saturday morning to show us how to operate the new cooker and then on Friday evening when the car died ! He was a god send - thank you so much! 24 - 31 March 2017
    Barrs
We have enjoyed very good weather for our week in this wonderful, comfortable, house. Thanks for the marmalade & honey - delicious !!!! 17 - 24 June 2016
    Porter
Yet another wonderful stay - thank you !! What can I add that hasn't already been said, except that I wish I was the owner of this wonderful home !! Thanks to all for making it so welcoming. We hope to return many times ! 14 October - 21 October 2016

Another fantastic holiday at Lower Lochturffin. The weather has been great, just rain at night. Pete enjoyed fishing and caught three good size fish. The cottage is a really wonderful place to stay - thank you. We all can't wait until we come back again! 26 May - 2 June 2017

Whoever arrives is in for amazing weather ! The back garden is a sun trap. Been to many places, found a very original Welsh place called Rosebush, super restaurant pub all made from zinc in the heart of the Preseli Hills. Vincent Davies is by far our favourite shop - sells everything ! Thanks to Byron for sorting the boiler problem out - again !!!! Seems we're jinxed. [Note from owner: following a prior visit by the Nash's, in November 2016, and the electricity tripping three times without apparent reason, we reviewed all appliances and fitted a brand new boiler in January 2017. Ironically it was this new boiler that suffered a technical fault during their next stay! The fault was rectified immediately]. It's been a very much needed peaceful two weeks and look forward to our return in October! 12 - 26 May 2017

Despite the rapid drop in temperature over the week the sun shone most of the time - you can take anything the weather throws at you when you return to a house like this. Yet another wonderful holiday, we will be back in October. Thanks to all at Lower Lochturffin for the hospitality. 21 - 28 April 2017

We have had a wonderful time, despite the weather being mixed. The house is beautiful, well equipped and spotlessly clean! Enjoyed walks around the lakes. The beaches and walks recommended in the very well written and presented guest guide were excellent - we will be back! 9 -16 September 2016

Well what can we say ..... we have stayed in many lovely holiday cottages over the years and none have anywhere near matched the cleanliness and attention to detail as what we have experienced here!! We would personally like to thank everyone responsible for maintaining such a high level of quality, both inside and outside the property. We were fortunate with the weather so we had lots of coastal walks as planned, our favourite was the length between Abermawr and Strumble Head, but beware it is not an easy stroll and requires a certain level of fitness to negotiate the steep climbs and descents along the way. In a few short spells fishing the lake I managed to catch four Rainbow trout which were all safely returned. We absolutely loved our stay here and hope to return again in the near future! 16 - 23 September 2016

Lovely quiet place, beautiful surroundings ! Hats off to the cleaning & maintenance staff !!! Hope to return. 2 - 9 June 2017

    Ramsay
Thanks for the week in this beautiful house, entering it really takes ones breath away as everything is so perfect. We thought we really knew this area, but Hilton Court, Picton Castle and the nursery garden at Brynberian in the Preselis were new to most of us ! 15-22 July 2016
    Meadows
A wonderful week - weather has been very kind to us. Accommodation is superb - always looking forward to our return after a day out ! Thank you to Mr Reynolds [the care taker] for coming by on Saturday; what a gentleman. He sorted out a step for my elderly mother in law [Note to explain the comment: there is just a single step in the cottage, between the lounge and two of the three bedrooms, but a temporary intermediate step was added to the existing step in order to assist this guest]. Had a brilliant day in Tenby, only an hour away but definitely worth a visit ! 28 April - 5 May 2017
    Binney
Another wonderful holiday in this superb cottage, which was beautifully presented as usual ! The weather has been very good with minimum rain. The coast and hedgerows are in full bloom. Had a very good fresh dressed crab from "Larrys" in Solva and Wavecrest cafe on Angle beach. 3 - 17 June 2016 [This is the Reeves' 17th visit to the cottage]
    Reeves
Very special place, loved the house and very practical ! We have been coming to this area for over 10 years and never tire of it 22 - 29 July 2016

Three generations have enjoyed an amazing stay in this lovely home. A wonderful ruby wedding celebration for the whole family. We will definitely return to this part of the world as there is much still to explore and enjoy. We have had perfect weather too. Thank you so much for everything. 12 - 19 August 2016.

Despite the stormy weather we had a good week in our favourite cottage. Walks a little restricted due to Rita recovering from a knee operation. Many thanks for the honey and marmalade, hope to be back in the Autumn. 24 February - 3 March 2017. [This is the Reeves' 19th visit to the cottage]

Thank you, we have had the most wonderful holiday here, it is truly a special place .... luxurious, comfortable and stunning views. The weather has been very kind too ! We highly recommend the boat trip around Ramsey Island with Voyages of Discovery - great fun !!!!! We also saw an otter in the large pond !!!! Many thanks for the delicious honey and marmalade. 7 - 14 October 2016

This is our fourth visit to Pembrokeshire and it certainly lived up to expectations. Lower Lochturffin is a superb cottage clean, comfortable, well equipped - the best by far !! Thank you to Mr & Mrs Reynolds for their input much appreciated ! None of our outings were repeats, but Porthgain was a new delight and we were treated to a close up visit from a seal in the harbour !! Closer to home we thoroughly enjoyed the garden, lakes and nature reserve as did our dog. We look forward to returning and thank you for the honey and marmalade! 23 - 30 September 2016
    Burridge
Enjoyed our week in these stylish surroundings, although mixed weather limited our use of the delightful garden. Coastal walking as good as ever, particularly Dinas Island and the Trefin / Abercastle walk. Ate at the Sloop Inn, Porthgain (wonderful crab salad) and The Mill at Trefin, which is very good for lighter meals. 2 - 9 September 2016
