…..from an article by Simon Wright. Welsh Special Treats from Gower in south Wales is celebrating after winning two prestigious 2011 Great Taste Awards. Jayne Roderick has been presented with two coveted one-star Gold Great Taste Awards for her Lemon Extra Marmalade and her Raspberry & Melon Jam.
The business started as a part-time hobby in 2006 and by 2010 repeat sales and complimentary feedback from Penclawdd, Sketty and Pennard Produce markets inspired a full time venture. Having given up her full time gardening job, Jayne now supplies many local businesses with her amazing array of preserves. A list of stockists can be found at www.welshspecialtreats.co.uk
Jayne said: “I am delighted with these awards. Winning a Great Taste Award recognizes the hard work and dedication that goes into making superb food and drink. The love of zesty lemons inspired the ‘Lemon Extra Marmalade’ Determined to stick with tradition and not use any setting agents it took several attempts to perfect this product, purely lemons & sugar! You won’t find any setting agents in my cupboards! Raspberry & Melon Jam was the first jam I ever made (20ish years ago!) Working as a Horticultural Instructor in Pembrokeshire, we had an abundance of beautiful raspberries and not wishing to see them waste I decided to try my hand at jam making and that recipe remains the same today! A soft set jam that leaves you just wanting more!”
The Great Taste Awards, organized by the Guild of Fine Food, are now in their 18th year and going from strength to strength. 7481 products were entered from 1600 companies for the 2011 Great Taste Awards. It took 350 experts 34 days to blind taste all the entries and decide which entries would achieve the coveted one, two and three star gold awards.
