Whistling Sands, otherwise known as Porthoer Beach, is a stunning beach on the Lleyn Heritage coast, with a dazzling, fine white sand. Its name came from the squeaking sound of the sand underfoot, this happens due to the unique shape of the sand particles- it is one of only two beaches in the entirety of Europe where this phenomenon occurs!
The beach, backed by steep grassy cliffs, is owned and maintained by the leading organisation National Trust, with a small car park situated a close-walk to the water’s edge! Whistling Sands is popular for watersports, including, sailing, surfing, body-boarding and diving; it is also a great beach to visit regardless of the season. In summer, facilities are provided to allow families to make the most of the good weather. In winter, a brisk and invigorating walk along the shoreline is a great way to energise the body. Spring brings a burst of colour, and not to mention, an abundance of wildlife, whilst lazy autumn is perfect to sit and watch the rolling waves in peace. This beach, which offers so much to every visitor, is only moments away from some of our most striking seaside cottages.
