A beautiful spacious cottage nestled in the corner of the Valley, it has all the creature comforts we're used to along with rural Welsh charm. The owner is welcoming and on hand to help offering guidance to make the most of the area. The beds we're super comfortable and it's incredibly quiet overnight so we slept really well. Really well enjoyed and regret having to leave to come back to the city .

Plas hendre became home the moment we arrived. Beautiful interiors, everything we needed plus extras on top, and the owner (whose house adjoins this) was wonderful, made us and the kids feel so very welcome and it was a struggle to leave it all behind. The walks from the cottage up the valley are stunning and feel so remote, yet a 15 min drive takes you back to the rest of the world. A fantastic week.

Paul Marsden - 7th November 2018

Excellent in every way. Lovely owner who could not have helped more. Perfect cottage in a lovely part of Wales. Hope to return.

We had the most relaxing holiday in the lovely cottage.Such a warm welcome with tea and welsh cakes. We had some great weather, some rainy weather allowed some lazy starts followed by glorious sunny afternoons on beaches and amazing walks from the door. We loved the log burner, thank you for everything. We'll be back.

A wonderful house in an amazing location. Sue was a really helpful host. Thank you for the lovely cake. We had some really good days out, Criccieth, Aberdaron and Llanbedrog. Cosy evenings around the log burner and really comfortable beds. Fresh eggs and homemade blackberry jelly were very much appreciated. Diolch Susan

Mrs Jones has been a wonderful host, from the time we arrived, she has been friendly and welcoming and couldn't do enough for us. It has been a pleasure staying in her cottage, and in some small part, feeding the sheep and see the newborn lambs has been a joy. Thank you Sue for being a marvellous host to me and my family. We look forward to returning and hopefully, the weather will be kind to us again.

We loved our time here and are already planning a trip back. The kids have loved feeding the lambs, chickens, cats and sheep. We have truly felt at home. Sue has been a wonderful host, generous with her time and knowledge. We have enjoyed, fires, walks and a dip in the river. We will miss Sue, Griff and the cats, but look forward to seeing you again.

Well, what a fabulous week we have had, dioch yn fawr Mrs Jones. The weather couldn't have been better, warm sunny days made our walk up Snowdon spectacular. Coming home each day to such a warm and cosy home from home. We have stayed in many cottages as we like to take our dogs away with us...this has definitely been one of the best ever. We'll be back.

Thank you Sue for making this one of the most memorable holidays we've had. Your warm welcome and thoughtfulness has made this a very special visit. Elliot and Catrin have enjoyed meeting Gruff the dog and the cats and they will miss feeding the hens every day when they get home to Hackney. Thank you for welcoming us so openly into your home and life and for sharing with us so many amusing stories! This is such a beautiful part of the world and we have enjoyed exploring some more of its hidden gems while out walking. Diolch Thank you

About the Area

  • There is only a short drive to some lovely beaches 5 miles to Porthmadog with the famous Black Rock Sands. This is a long stretch of sands where cars are allowed and the sea bathing is very safe.
  • Borth y Gest inland from Black Rock along the estuary has several sandy coves and inlets ideal for children to potter about in the pools and grown ups relax admiring the views across the estuary to Harlech.
  • Criccieth only 6 miles from Cwm Pennant has 2 splendid Blue Flag beaches divided by the tiny castle on the hillside. Join the Coastal Path at Borth y Gest and enjoy spectacular views all the way to Criccieth.

Welsh Highland & Ffestiniog Railways

  • Both have their terminus here in Porthmadog take the Welsh Highland through Snowdonia up to Caernarfon disembark to admire the massive fortress on the edge of the Menai Straits. This is not just a ruin but with rooms containing military memorabilia and more.
  • The Ffestiniog goes in the opposite direction up the lovely wooded Maentwrog Valley to Ffestiniog. Visit the slate caverns here and for the adventurous visit Zip World and experience the nearest thing to flying as you zip down over the slate caverns. Try Bounce Below in the under ground chambers where you can bounce climb or slide on huge bouncing nets. There is a smaller cavern for children to enjoy.

  • Nothing quite like this village anywhere in Britain it feels like Italy has come to Wales with its colourful houses, shops and restaurants. Wander around the woodlands and walk along the water's edge to find private little coves. Often used by film companies the cult film The Prisoner was made here and there are re enactments each Summer. Festival 6 set here in September is very popular with famous groups, singers and literary talks.

Places to eat

  • There are 2 good restaurants in Portmeirion. The lovely Art Deco dining room in the Portrmeirion Hotel is an experience enjoy drinks out on the terrace above the estuary or in Castell Deudraeth their Victorian manor house on the edge of the village. Plenty of places to eat in Criccieth, tea rooms. ice cream parlour, fish and chips. Recommended are Dylan's on the front an imposing Art Deco building which serves food throughout the day and The Blossoms is very good too.
  • In Porthmadog try The Old Bakery with two talented new chefs. For artisan bread and wholesome quiches etc buy at the Big Rock cafe and The Moorings in Borth y Gest is excellent. Dinner reservations advisable for all eateries mentioned.
  • Supermarkets in profusion in Porthmadog from Tesco, Lidil and Aldi.

  • Explore the national park by climbing Snowdon or for the less energetic take the train to the summit open through the Summer months hugely popular so booking in advance advisable. Beautiful walks abound in the lovely Beddgelert area. A favourite with children is the walk along the river at Beddgelert to 'Gelert's Grave' and statue with a sad story written below the grave.
