A lovely week in this gorgeous place. We had sun, wind & rain, more wind and rain and some more rain and some more sun. Whatever the weather we had a fantastic time on the beach, walking the coast path and here in the Hen House.

Dunraven Bay Holiday Cottage Sleeps 5 - Dogs welcome

  • Fabulous Dunraven Bay (Blue Flag), on the Glamorgan Heritage Coast, the 'Golden Coast' of South Wales, is a 5 minute walk away along a wooded footpath from this charming detached holiday cottage.
  • Once home to a family of friendly hens and now converted into a characterful home for holidays, this Glamorgan Heritage Coast cottage at the end of a 600 yard private driveway.
  • It is together with Slade Cottage (1201) in the small courtyard of 'Slade' - a 'gentleman's residence' formerly part of the Dunraven Estate but now privately owned, which includes the premier organic award winning 'Slade Farm', suppliers of meat to Waitrose as well as its own farm shop (2 miles) at Pitcot Farm, St Brides Major.
  • There are 2 ground floor bedrooms, a sitting room on the mezzanine floor overlooked by a galleried dining area, a kitchen (lovely rural views over organic pastures) and a pretty single bedroom on the 1st floor.
  • The small walled private patio is ideal for barbecues and the separate large lawned area is great for games of all sorts!
  • Guided farm walks, tractor rides and bird-watching safaris are available to cottage visitors by arrangement with the owners as well as a wealth of detailed information about the local environment.
  • Situated in the Grounds of the Hen House - a Shepherds Hut can also be hired for your stay sleeping 2 people (See details below).
  • Within walking distance is the Three Golden Cups Pub or try Florics for a wonderful Italian meal - very family friendly.

Dining/Kitchen 5 steps up from mezzanine floor (sloping ceilings) and open plan galleried area with dining table seating 6 overlooking sitting room, fitted kitchen, microwave, electric cooker, larder fridge, freezer, washer/dryer, (lovely rural views).

Grounds front paved courtyard, small side courtyard with garden furniture, additional paved area with 4 steps up to large lawn.

Shepherd's Hut Additional accommodation for 2 people in the Shepherds Hut in the Garden with double bed, small table and log burner -�200 p/w paid locally to owner. Please advise at time of booking if you would like to hire the Shepherds Hut.

Glamorgan Heritage Coast & Coastal Path near Dunraven Bay holiday cottage

  • The Glamorgan Heritage Coast is a fabulous jewel - glorious beaches, backed by limestone cliffs, great for fossil hunting, surfing, canoeing, rock pooling, horse riding and huge sand dunes (including The Big Dipper, one of the largest single dunes in Europe).
  • There are 14 miles of Heritage Coastal Path, fine limestone cliffs with unique rock formations, flora, fauna, birds galore, sea angling from Witches Point, historic castles, pretty villages and ancient towns - a true 'box of delights' for all the family to delight in!

Merthy Mawr, Ogmore Castle

  • Merthyr Mawr is the prettiest village - roses round the doors, thatched roofs and cream teas, walk across 52 stepping stones over the River Ewenny to fascinating Ogmore Castle (check the tide times first!)

Dunraven Castle near dog friendly holiday cottage

  • Do visit the walled garden - all that remains of Dunraven Castle - and the iron age hill fort - truly spectacular views - perhaps the best view in South Wales?

Cowbridge & Llantwit Major

  • Do explore Cowbridge (the Bond Street of Wales!) - boutique shops lining an ancient Roman Road and quaint Llantwit Major - narrow streets steeped in Welsh history and an ancient seat of learning for Welsh Saints.

St Donats Castle & Atlantic College

  • St Donats 12th century castle nearby, restored in the 1920's with an eclectic mix of medieval features salvaged from England and France by the Californian newspaper magnet Randolf Hearst as a retreat for his mistress is currently home to the internationally renowned Atlantic College, part of the United World Colleges. Sitting on the heritage coastline, the school houses 350 pupils from all over the world and has its own active RNLI Station, crewed by school staff and pupils.


  • The RIB (rigid inflatable boat) - the world's most widely-used craft for inshore rescue - was conceived, designed and built at Atlantic College under its founding headmaster, retired Rear-Admiral Desmond Hoare and was named by the RNLI after its birthplace. The patented design was handed over to the RNLI by Desmond Hoare with all the rights in 1973 , for the nominal fee of�1 - he did not cash the cheque.

  • In the Dark Ages St Illtud's religious school at Llantwit Major had St David, the Patron Saint of Wales, as one of its pupils.
