About Lower Lochturffin
Luxury Pembrokeshire house near Abermawr and Aberbach beaches, pets welcome
  • Lower Lochturffin - "the boundary of the marsh water".
  • The Welsh Government’s 'Visit Wales' 5 star rating, with a perfect score of 175 out of 175 for the fourth consecutive year. Also certified by 'Visit Wales' as meeting the requirements of its Walkers and Cyclists Welcome Scheme. Recommended in the "Travel Doctor" column of The Times newspaper 15 October 2016. A unique beautifully renovated home of two Pembrokeshire stone barns, in part dating back to the early 18th century, linked together by a central lounge which has floor to ceiling glass walls on two sides and a turf roof.
  • Amazing location, with beautiful sunsets, overlooking and with access to private nature reserve containing two small lakes and a meadow with large pond, both surrounded by beautiful countryside.
  • Guests often return, with repeat bookings typical.
  • The property is accessed down a gated private tree lined drive-way of roughly a quarter mile. Set in approximately seven acres of fenced, landscaped and wooded gardens and nature reserve, there is plenty of room for children to play and kick a ball. August 2014 saw the commencement of a biodiversity project in the meadow to restore it to wild flowers and trees native only to the British Isles.
  • Lower Lochturffin has its own unique and specially compiled 100 page pictorial user guide book, featuring the history and meaning of the name of the cottage, the amenities the cottage has to offer and a personal review by the family owners of the many nearby local beaches, places to eat, picnic sites, gardens to visit and places for guests to visit on their way home.
  • Whilst the cottage is fenced off from the nature reserve, lakes and pond, the lakes and pond each being about 100 yards from the cottage, guests should always supervise their children when they are in the nature reserve or meadow, particularly where the children are young or unable to swim.
  • Lower Lochturffin is a stylishly furnished and equipped quality holiday cottage with extremely high standards throughout.
  • Eat out on the patio, with its sun loungers and barbecue, with views to the nature reserve, or have a picnic in the meadow or at some of the other picnic spots suggested in the user guide. We have a picnic backpack for your use.
  • Under floor central heating - every room with its' own thermostatic control, and an oil burning stove in the lounge makes this beautiful home extremely comfortable and warm all year.
  • The family owners place a high emphasis on ensuring the cleanliness of the cottage, with the house keeper having received many compliments in the visitors' book for it being spotless.
  • You can park within a few yards of the front door and there is just a single step in the cottage, between the lounge and two of the three bedrooms. There is no step at the main entry door to the cottage, allowing for easy wheelchair access.
  • There are no extra charges over and above what you pay to Quality Cottages. Two pet dogs are also very welcome free of charge - the immediate and greater property is fenced.

    About The Area

    • Why not try free fly fishing on the larger lake for rainbow trout? No other kind of fishing is permitted. The fishing season is from 1 April to 31 October. A fishing licence is required and fishing is limited to 2 anglers at any one time, although it is unlikely that anyone else will be fishing. You must supply your own fly fishing  equipment. Dry fly and nymph. No reservoir lures. Catch and release preferred, but you are welcome to take home one rainbow trout each per day per rod.
    • 2014 saw the arrival of otters at Lower Lochturffin – great for nature lovers, but not necessarily great for fishing! By law we are prohibited from interfering with otters, and would anyway not do so, so if it is your intention to fish during your stay, please make Quality Cottages specifically aware of this at the time of your booking so we can do our best to ensure that the lake is stocked prior to your arrival.

    Why you love Lower Lochturffin
[Lower Lochturffin lists, in random order, all reviews written in its guest comment book in 2017 and 2018]. Despite the rapid drop in temperature over the week the sun shone most of the time - you can take anything the weather throws at you when you return to a house like this. Yet another wonderful holiday, we will be back in October. Thanks to all at Lower Lochturffin for the hospitality. 21 - 28 April 2017

Whoever arrives is in for amazing weather ! The back garden is a sun trap. Been to many places, found a very original Welsh place called Rosebush, super restaurant pub all made from zinc in the heart of the Preseli Hills. Vincent Davies is by far our favourite shop - sells everything ! Thanks to Byron for sorting the boiler problem out. [Note from owner - a new boiler, fitted in January 2017, suffered a technical fault during the guest's stay. The fault was rectified on the same day it arose]. It's been a very much needed peaceful two weeks and look forward to our return in October! 12 - 26 May 2017

Another fantastic holiday at Lower Lochturffin. The weather has been great, just rain at night. Pete enjoyed fishing and caught three good size fish. The cottage is a really wonderful place to stay - thank you. We all can't wait until we come back again! 26 May - 2 June 2017

We have had a week of two halves, the first of which the weather was glorious, the second half wet and windy - typical Welsh weather! Despite being somewhat restricted due to my husband's health & Bonnie (the collie) being recently diagnosed with a tumour, we've loved the garden and the nature reserve. We'd like to express our sincere thanks to Mr Reynolds, the caretaker, who came to our aid twice, once on Saturday morning to show us how to operate the new cooker and then on Friday evening when the car died ! He was a god send - thank you so much! 24 - 31 March 2017

Our fourth visit - still as amazing and feels like home. We have been extremely lucky with the weather. Thank you for letting us stay in your beautiful house. We have been fortunate too that we’ve had a trout and a bass barbecue!! 22 June - 6 July 2017

We know the area really well, but this is our first visit to Lower Lochturffin. We have enjoyed our stay and have been very lucky with the weather - wonderful property and we will look forward to our next visit ! [Comment two:] Have had a smashing week in this lovely cottage - the bonus being the lake and nature reserve. Also loved the daily "dawn chorus" - wonderful. Will certainly return. 4 - 11 May 2018

Firstly, may I thank “The Davies Family", Byron & Moira for the wonderful surprise on our arrival. As usual the cottage is immaculate. Weather has been pretty poor - rain, hail and high winds! However we made the most of things, as there was always something to do. Merry Christmas and a happy New Year !! Thanks for the marmalade and honey 24 November - 1 December 2017 [This is the Reeves' 21st visit to the cottage]

A wonderful property, great facilities, well equipped. Loved the lakes and grounds. Thank you for the honey and marmalade. Suggest closing the curtains on the lounge windows when not in use to stop bird strikes - we had one killed! Enjoyed White Sands bay, Porthgain and walks nearby! Wish we could have stayed here another month - a beautiful and peaceful part of the world. Would love to come back. 23 June - 7 July 2017

Enjoyed our visit once again, but not the weather, rainy most days, had a couple of nice sunny days but made the most of our visit and went to Pembroke Castle and the south area - Stackpole, Bosherton, Freshwater East - the most beautiful beach in the area! On the whole a nice break ! 13 - 27 April 2018

I find it very difficult to visualise how such a wonderful house and nature reserve were developed from a jungle that almost completely obliterated the remains of two old barns ! We were only booked in for a week but we were allowed to stay an extra day. Considering the time of year the weather has been fantastic. It was really warm, walking many miles on the coastal paths. My lasting memory will be of a perfect house, in an idyllic setting, which was always very quiet and peaceful. Thanks to everyone involved in the development and maintenance. [Comment two:] What a beautiful home, so well lived and cared for. As soon as I walked through the door I felt a welcoming hug from Lower Lochturffin. The house, garden and nature reserve are very special indeed. Thank you for sharing this peaceful retreat. It’s going to be very difficult to leave! 27 October - 4 November 2017

First visit to this nice cottage and it’s wonderful garden. Most everything is in place and the ponds are a highlight too. Only the midges weren’t too welcome as their stitches will last longer than our summer's tan! Sad the shower has only pressure for two guests. Positive - almost everything ! Negative: lawn wasn’t cut first Friday and the beds have been beautifully done but no cleaning (during our stay), not a little has happened. Suggestion: discount for long term bookings or declaration that no cleaning will be included just bedding. [Response from owner - we appreciate this feedback. To date we have not offered cleaning services to guests during their stay, other than a weekly change of bed linen. In order to address this comment we have reviewed our policies so that in future if anyone stays for longer than a week then additionally, with the consent of the guests, we will also do a weekly clean of the bathrooms and the kitchen and, on request, any other weekly light cleaning they require] [Guest comment two:] One of the most beautiful places I have stayed in. The peace and tranquillity is priceless. Hope to return. 1 - 22 June 2018

Beautiful stay in a beautiful home. Had a lush week exploring our beloved Pembrokeshire and found some new hidden gems thanks to your recommendations, despite us having visited the area for 21 years. The peaceful garden and nature reserve are lovely and perfect for a barbecue and games! We loved every minute of it. Thank you for letting us stay and experience your gorgeous home.

Another visit to this wonderful cottage, presented immaculately as ever - well done to Byron & Moira. We could not think of a cosier place to be during Monday’s storm ! Generally the weather was fine and we lunched outside a couple of pubs on five occasions. We think the new "Guest Guide" is first class. We will be back in the last week in November. [This is the Reeves' 20th visit to the cottage] 13 - 20 October 2017

What a fantastic holiday home - the best we have ever stayed in !! Such thoughtful attention to detail and very much appreciated - thank you! The Cross in St Davids was very dog friendly, with good food. The Farmers in Mathry was also welcoming with lovely food, but quite small inside for dogs who like to stretch out !!!! Newgale Beach was lovely - dogs on the south end !!! Abermawr good at low tide. Thanks again for a lovely stay. 15 - 22 September 2017

Our first time to Lower Lochturffin and what a pleasant stay it has been. The cottage has been great - immaculately presented, with everything we could have wanted ! Just a shame about the weather, but it didn’t stop us getting out and about. Thank you ! 20 - 27 October 2017

Having holidayed in Pembrokeshire for many years, we can honestly say this is the best cottage we have ever stayed in! It was spotlessly clean and extremely well equipped. The weather improved as the week went on. Loved the lakes and grounds. Thanks for a great stay! 29 September - 6 October 2017

We have really enjoyed our stay here. The cottage is comfortable and spacious and clean ! Hard to believe so many dogs have stayed here in the past - there is no trace of them ! Newgale beach is stunning and fabulous for dogs. We all had a fantastic time on the boat trip to Ramsey Island and would recommend the wet 'n wild package. This is a very special place and we hope to return. 4 - 11 August 2017

Our third visit to this beautiful cottage - a real home from home, I'm sure we will be back again ! A gorgeous week apart from one wet day. Thank you for the honey 7 - 14 July 2017

First visit to Lower Lochturffin, although as Pembrokeshire veterans one of our favourite places for family holidays in the U.K. ! Great location and great house, very well equipped. A wonderful week - weather has been very kind to us. Accommodation is superb - always looking forward to our return after a day out ! Thank you to Mr Reynolds [the care taker] for coming by on Saturday; what a gentleman. He sorted out a step for my elderly mother in law [Note to explain the comment: there is just a single step in the cottage, between the lounge and two of the three bedrooms, but a temporary intermediate step was added to the existing step in order to assist this guest]. Had a brilliant day in Tenby, only an hour away but definitely worth a visit ! 28 April - 5 May 2017

Our first visit to this amazing house. We have had an incredible time and will be back again to stay !!! 16 - 23 March 2018

A superb holiday home, what a find ! Lovely peaceful setting and wonderful attention to detail. When we arrived there was a problem with the heating. Mr Reynolds the caretaker was great coming straight over, in the end after the electricity tripped Mr Reynolds had a plumber and Electrician straight over on Saturday and the fault was fixed . Our dogs loved the grounds and settled straight away. We will be back again for another visit 30 March - 6 April 2018

Thank you for such a wonderful home, Max & Sadie (the dogs) loved the grounds. We left early due to ill health - lack of ability to walk far, although made it to Solva Harbour - tide out and Max & Sadie in the stream !!! 9 - 13 September 2017

As last year we have had a wonderful Christmas at Lower Lochturffin. What a great place to spend the Xmas holidays. Weather was not good, to be expected, it is winter, but that did not mar our enjoyment. Thank you for the marmalade and honey, appreciated, and for the facilities etc that you provide. 22 - 29 December 2017
    Vale
Cottage as superb as ever ! First four days cloudless blue skies made walking a real pleasure, due to the snow warnings for latter part of the week we decided (reluctantly) to leave on the Wednesday instead of Friday. Many thanks to all concerned and also for the honey & marmalade. [This is the Reeves' 22nd visit to the cottage]

Despite the stormy weather we had a good week in our favourite cottage. Walks a little restricted due to Rita recovering from a knee operation. Many thanks for the honey and marmalade, hope to be back in the Autumn. 24 February - 3 March 2017. [This is the Reeves' 19th visit to the cottage]
