Bird watchers delight at Cresswell Quay near Lawrenny

• Steep Pembrokeshire wooded banks frame the sweeping bend in the river at Cresswell Quay near Lawrenny - an idyllic spot for watching the sunset, having a picnic or a drink at the old riverside pub, the Cresselly Arms.
• Lots of bird life on this tidal river - herons, a great variety of waders, kingfishers and across the water is Scotland Wood with buzzards soaring high above the trees.
• Why not try a canoe or kayak trip on a summers evening along the river from Lawrenny to Cresswell Quay or a walk along the river bank through mystical ancient oak woodland with views across the river to Benton Castle?

Local shopping

• For large supermarket shopping visit Pembroke Dock about 4 miles away. For more individual and interesting shops including delicatessen and green grocer try Pembroke or Narberth.

Broad Haven, Freshwater, Barafundle (NT), Manorbier & Tenby Blue Flag Beaches

• South Pembrokeshire's finest golden beaches - Broad Haven South, Freshwater West, Barafundle, Manorbier and Tenby are all nearby and other family favourites like Oakwood Leisure Park, Folly Farm, Heatherton Country Park, romantic ruined Carew Castle and Tidal Mill are all within a short drive of this rural Pembrokeshire cottage.

Upton Castle Gardens and Medieval Chapel

• Enjoy utter peace and tranquillity in the beautiful 35 acres of gardens filled with colour and an impressive collection of rare trees and shrubs overlooked by the handsome 13th century Upton Castle (not open to the public). Explore the rose garden, herbaceous borders, woodland walks, medieval fish ponds remains and traditional walled vegetable garden. The castle and Medieval Chapel which is older than the castle were investigated by Channel 4's Time Team in 2013.

Boat Trips

• Exceptional wildlife boat trips, coastal cruises, historic river tours and access to offshore islands are available from Tenby Harbour, Neyland Marina, and Martin's Haven. Boat trips around Ramsey Island are available from St Davids. Expect to see myriad seabirds including comical puffins and shy manx shearwaters, seals, dolphins, Napoleonic forts, a bustling Haven Waterway, the tranquil and industrious monks of Caldey Island and their Grade II listed Italianate Abbey designed by John Coates-Carter in 1906.

• Narberth is a bustling old town with many independent and individual shops, galleries, crafts, antiques a choice of places to eat and drink and a free car park (except summer).

Stackpole Village, Inn, Quay (NT) & Barafundle Bay

• The pretty village of Stackpole has an award winning Inn serving excellent food. Look out for the Millennium arch over the school gate on the opposite side of the road. The tiny picturesque quay ( National Trust) has the Boathhouse Tearoom close by. An ideal place in which to drink tea in the garden and watch the world go by. The energetic should take picnics and bathing costumes and walk over the headland to Barafundle Bay. A beautiful spot for a swim and claimed to have 'everything to make a summer special'.

• Walk along the river bank, listen to the birds. Look for little whitewashed Benton Castle nestled in the trees on the opposite side of the river and enjoy a leisurely meal and bottle of wine on the lawn of award winning Quayside Cafe.

Walk from Amroth to Lydstep

• Keen, fit walkers might enjoy this surprisingly taxing walk with continued interest along the way including woodland stretches and magnificent coastal scenery.

King Quoit Burial Chamber, Manorbier

• The chamber is spectacularly placed above Manorbier Bay. It has two small side stones and a cap stone.
